Growing Lab

By 15-07-2016

The Growing Lab project Officina Corpuscoli looks at the ecosystem as a raw material that can be cultivated, seeking production alternatives and new creative possibilities. It shows a near future in which fungal organisms will be one of the main actors realizing a responsible social development.

The project introduces a variety of innovative materials and products developed by employing mycelium, a rhizomic network of fungal “roots”. Fungal mycelium consists of a dense network of interlocking filamentous cells. The mycelium can break down and convert organic matter in order to extend its network of hyphae. This fungal behavior can be used to create 100% natural biomaterials with diverse properties.

By growing fungi on a range of organic waste streams, Officina Corpuscoli – in direct collaboration with the Utrecht University – has created a large palette of myco-materials with rubber-like, plastic-like, paper-like and wood-like properties. The developed materials and techniques have been implemented for growing different products, ranging from tiles to vessels and from furniture to insulating modules.
