Hat Design

By 21-02-2020

“After my fashion training in The Hague, I specialised in the classic, traditional techniques of hat making at the London College of Fashion. In 1990 I founded my own studio: Berry Rutjes Jr. Hatdesign. I design and make hats, including elegant occasional hats for a wedding, a christening party, a concours hippique, a chic high tea or a modest funeral.”

“A hat is an investment. You have to like it for a long time and it has to be of lasting quality. So I use as many natural materials as possible, because they ‘breathe’ and are therefore comfortable to wear. Each material requires its own approach and processing. And then I can pride myself on my long experience and my classic British schooling.”

“This of course also includes colour dyeing materials – not only the ‘fabrics’ but even the feathers that can be used as trimmings. Decoration of (silk) flowers is also possible. And of course I make those flowers myself, up to and including the stamens and pistils. A painstaking job, but the result is fantastic.”
