Hello I’m A’DAM – the creation of a new Amsterdam icon

By 16-07-2021

A’DAM Tower celebrates its fifth anniversary with a colourful book

Hello I’m A’DAM – the creation of a new Amsterdam icon, is a handy reference book about the transformation of the A’DAM Tower with personal stories of the people who have made it what it is today; an Amsterdam home for music, entrepreneurship and creativity. The book, a co-production by The Stone Twins and Arne van Terphoven in honour of the fifth anniversary, provides a wonderful glimpse into the creation of a new Amsterdam icon.

Between 1360 and 1769, the site of the A’DAM Tower was known as the gallows field. After the gallows of Volewijck were put away, Amsterdam-North became the home of the working class. In the 20th century, the area on the waterfront was transformed into Shell’s working area with laboratories, factories, storage tanks and offices – culminating in the Overhoeks tower designed by architect Arthur Staal. Fast forward to 2011 and dance entrepreneurs Sander Groet and Duncan Stutterheim presented their plans for the tower in an open pitch to the municipality. They won the pitch and started the project together with partners Hans Brouwer (MassiveMusic) and project developer Eric-Jan de Rooij (Lingotto). And the rest is history.

Five years of A’DAM Tower
After a lengthy renovation, the A’DAM Tower opened its doors in May 2016 with a festive opening by then Mayor Eberhard van der Laan. The tower became a multifunctional vertical city with an observation deck, members’ club, multiple restaurants, a hotel, nightclub and creative offices.

By now, more than 50 creative businesses have taken up residence in the A’DAM Tower and it is known as an international attraction. More than 121 different nationalities have already visited LOOKOUT. The swings on the observation deck, in particular, are a true experience in which more than 800,000 daredevils have dared to take a seat. Every year, Moon Restaurant is the scene of around 300 marriage proposals, some of these lovebirds are among 54 couples who have married in the Loft.

The ‘Hello, I’m A’DAM’ book about the history of the area, the transformation of the building and the highlights of recent years is now available exclusively for €14.95 in the giftshop of A’DAM LOOKOUT (open to everyone).
