Hermitage Signage: Wandering Through a Cultural Phenomenon

By 23-09-2019

The State Hermitage Museum Saint Petersburg is one of the biggest and oldest art and cultural history museums in the world with a collection consisting of more than 3 million art objects. Mijksenaar, the Dutch information design office, received a noteworthy commission for the development of a digital strategy for the General Staff Building.

Three LED screens behind the second floor windows, above the entrance, greatly increase the attention level of the entrance. These screens display moving images of art works characteristic for the General Staff Building. It also offers an opportunity to create additional attention for temporary exhibitions.

Inside, animations prompt art lovers to discover the expansive collection. Digital index screens display paintings by famous artists, such as Monet, Renoir and Matisse. Animated projections lead visitors towards the museum galleries and temporary exhibitions, where they can wander through an extraordinary world of European art from the 19th and 20th centuries.
