Hortus Bionica: 3D Textile Design Collection

By 25-06-2020

Studio Samira Boon has launched the collection of 3D textile designs ‘Hortus Bionica’ in collaboration with Sensor Lab Utrecht and with the support of the Creative Industries Fund NL.

“We believe that sustainable and healthy living in the future will be adaptive and interactive like natural systems. To achieve this, over the last years we have developed digitally produced origami designs to implement as lightweight and dynamic 3D textile installations that generate flexible space.”

“Hortus Bionica explores men’s relationship with nature to foster healthier forms of architecture based on biophilic design principles. It is a garden of bionic plants – a new species of architectural elements that are able to carry out a number of smart functions and optimise flows (energy, light, sound, movement) within public spaces.”

“Each design has its own unique functional application and character, behaviourally as well as visually. The first two Hortus Bionica ‘sprouts’ are ‘~ ~ ~’ (sonic blossom reacting to sound) and ‘>> • <<’ (proxy flower reacting to movement and vicinity).”
