Imago Libri

By 23-03-2017

The work Lucian Wester finds its origins in photography; however, the act of photographing is now totally subservient to a research that focuses on the photographic medium and its associated discourse. Through his work he often investigates or deconstructs the photographic medium; he unravels and reconstructs it through technical/physical experiments that he links to philosophical/social issues that places the research in a broader context.

Imago Libri is the first book in a series of books that Wester constructs from books he buys at flea markets, second hand stores and from the internet. He took the books apart into spreads and rearranged them into a new book that changes the context and content of the photos creating a new meaning. This process is mostly intuitive, however the structure of the book leads from a natural chaos to a more human chaos and art. By rearranging the old books Wester gives them a new life and a different perspective on their content.

Wester studied at st. Joost in Breda and at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam. He exhibited at LhGWR in The Hague and Tent in Rotterdam. He was nominated for the St. Joost penning and received stipends from the Mondriaan Fund and CBK Rotterdam.
