June Fashion Month Arnhem

By 06-06-2023

Report by Branko Popovic, Artistic Director FASHIONCLASH

During the June Fashion Month Arnhem (2 June to 2 July 2023), Fashion + Design Festival Arnhem together with Museum Arnhem, Rozet and various partners, designers and entrepreneurs will show the socially connecting power of fashion and design.

On Friday 2 June, there was a private opening at Museum Arnhem that opened the exhibition ‘Between Borders’.

This day also saw the big ArtEZ graduation fashion show at Musis. This edition featured the now 65th generation of graduates, celebrating the long tradition of fashion in Arnhem. The class of 2023 is one with as many as 27 graduates, but the well-produced show, also a graduation project of Luisa Haddad Zavadinack, went dynamically and smoothly.

The graduation projects of the current generation tend to be based on personal stories that often touch on family stories, in some the material research is the starting point of the collection and upcyling is a common approach in of the collections. For the current generation, sustainability is not a theme but a matter of course.

Between Borders
Between Borders is an exhibition about migration, being welcome somewhere, feeling at home and living between two worlds. The first part of Between Borders shows body-related designs, such as fashion and jewellery, by 19 designers with a migration background living in the Netherlands. In Tussen grenzen, you can admire work by Armia Yousefi, Branko Popovic, Chequita Nahar, David Paulus, Denzel Veerkamp, Fleuri la Belle, Garcia Bello, Kalkidan Hoex, Karim Adduchi, Lisa Konno, Loïs Brandsen, Luisa Kuschel, Marcos Kueh, Maja Simišić, Mehdi Mashayekhi, Murat Akbas, Xhosa, Yinka Buutfeld, Zyanya Keizer.

Especially for this exhibition, a documentary has been made where 9 designers speak about their personal stories and perspectives that together show how complex migration narratives are and invites the viewer to look beyond the drama to its power and celebration. In any case, the exhibition showcases the work of the creators who themselves were given the freedom to show what they wanted for themselves; and in this way, a dialogue has emerged that yet, the documentary proves, does not happen very often at all.

Between Borders can be seen until 22 October 2023. Between Borders consists of two parts. From 3 June, young fashion and jewellery designers living in the Netherlands show work about living and working between two worlds. From 15 July, (inter)national artists and Arnhemmers will also share their personal experiences with borders and migration.

Outside the Lines – FDFA
Eight Arnhem-based designers from the Tussen grenzen exhibition at Museum Arnhem are also part of the Fashion + Design Festival Arnhem. With the theme Outside the Lines, FDFA, together with various partners, designers and entrepreneurs, shows that the most interesting encounters and discoveries do not take place within the beaten track, but just outside it. That design Outside the Lines, in the field of both fashion and design, can promote cohesion in society and thus have an anti-polarising effect. With this theme, FDFA challenges both designers and visitors to dare to think outside the box, thus promoting mutual acceptance.

The programme of FDFA and June Fashion Month Arnhem runs until 2 July 2023 and consists of an extensive and widely accessible programme at various locations in Arnhem. On display is work by Arnhem-based designers such as ROUMANS, Hul le Kes, *DIED*, Not Just a Collective, Carolien Evers, Hans Hutting, etc.
