Key holders

By 08-09-2016

How can a church regain a meaningful place in a community and fulfil a contemporary, societal role?

Creative agency 212 Fahrenheit developed for the Stichting Oude Groninger Kerken the Sleutelbewaardersconcept (the Key holders’ concept) in which a church and a primary school enter into a structural collaboration by sharing the key of the church. The project is designed to make young villagers aware of the role of the church in their community and encourage them to think about the kind of role that the church could fulfill in the future.

‘Sharing’ the key is a festive moment. The school receives a Sleutelbewaarderskist (Key holders’ Casket) containing the key of the church, a certificate, the Sleutelbewaardersspel (Key holders’ Game) and educational material. On the day of the event, the students play the Key holders’ Game, a quiz in and around the church. Back in the classroom, they talk about what they have seen in the church.

Once the Game has been played, the key is effectively shared. This creates a basis of trust between the volunteers of the local management committee and the people of the school.
