Dutch Design Awards – Public Award Winner 2022

Designers and artists from various disciplines transformed every-day care tasks and household activities into an experience for residents with a severe mental or multiple disabilities. This provides new insights for their supervisors. On behalf of the care organisation Severinus, Sjaak Langenberg & Rosé de Beer integrated the designer’s view into care employees’ skill sets by developing the Kleinkijkacademie together with them and from their perspective. As such, social designer Manon van Hoeckel literally took a fresh look at two residences; she turned window washing into an interactive game with residents. The final working methods and prototypes are now included in the Leerplein and the Severinus vocational training.

Expert jury
With the Kleinkijkacademie, the designers have succeeded in finding an in-depth yet light-hearted way of easing care tasks. Sjaak Langenberg & Rosé de Beer make the invisible tangible. The Kleinkijkacademie involves employees in such a way that they can actually apply new insights. In doing so, the designers and artists really leave behind something that is relevant for both residents and supervisors. The seemingly simple nature of the resources and working methods have a major impact. They provide a very concrete and simultaneously playful vision of a serious theme.
