Life On Hold
Nominee DuPho. SO Award 2023
‘Life On Hold’ tells the story from the perspective of the Ukrainian refugee In Holland. While life is on hold in their homeland, it continues here.
“In February 2022, I met Evgenia, a Ukrainian also fled the war. During one of my conversations with Evgenia, I found out that there were quite a few misconceptions about Ukrainian refugees. I also read little about how the more than 70,000 Ukrainians in our country fared. Indeed, we only remember the images of the fleeing families, mostly mothers with children, but how they were doing here after now 6 months of war no one could really tell me.
With the help of Evegenia, I came into contact with dozens of families scattered throughout the Netherlands. In August and September, we visited and documented them, with the aim of ‘giving a face’ to the Ukrainian refugee in the Netherlands. One thing quickly became clear to me: ‘they just want to go back home’.”
Jury SO Award: In the series, we were surprised by the composition of each photograph. Actually, they are all documentary images. We zoomed in on the quality of the photography and here that story was told most strongly. Especially because it’s about the people and not just about the pain.
