Light Circles

By 09-03-2017

For Robeco’s new office building in Rotterdam, Studio Wieki Somers has designed a light installation consisting of twelve circles made of resin blocks.

The circles represent the sun and the moon and display the time in an abstract manner, alluding to the stock market’s round-the-clock activity. One of the circles lights up each hour: the first circle on the east side at 7 o’clock in the morning, the second circle one hour later, and so on until 7 o’clock in the evening, after which the cycle is repeated in opposite direction. The outer circle takes its color palette from the sun, while the inner circle has moon-like colors. During the day the sun shines in the building and at night the moon illuminates the interior. The light the circles emit grows fuller during each month, synchronized with the lunar cycle.
