Lilypad

By 20-03-2020

The work of multidisciplinary design studio Visual Citizens ranges from digital visualisations and set architecture to product design and sculpture. With an eye on the future and a focus on sensorial experience, Visual Citizens are currently exploring the intersection between digital and physical design.

The studio was founded by Shali Kelly from South Africa and Adam Kelly from Scotland. The two met and worked together at an architecture studio in Barcelona, which is where the initial idea for a digital studio focusing on future spaces came together. The studio was later founded in Cape Town, in early 2018, where they worked briefly on competitions. They then moved to Rotterdam, which is where their studio is currently based.

The pair relocated to The Netherlands to learn about Dutch design, which has always fascinated them. They are constantly finding inspiration around the city of Rotterdam as well as the Dutch countryside. They recently exhibited their work at Dutch Design Week. Their exhibition, entitled Lilypad, was an immersive experience designed to question perspectives on the digital and its relation to the natural world. Inspired by the water lily, nature’s mystical flower, Visual Citizens created a digital landscape with biomimetic furniture and primitive objects.
