Looking back at Milan 2019 by Jacob de Baan

By 24-04-2019

Like every year, Jacob de Baan makes a selection from Milan Design Week presentations of Dutch designers for Dutch Design Daily. Jacob de Baan: “This time I focused on designers who presented objects or installations that look surprisingly simple, but which involved a lot to realize them.”

‘Journey of a Raindrop’ for Issey Miyake, design Jólan van der Wiel
Jólan van der Wiel presented his Journey of a Raindrop in collaboration with fashion house Issey Miyake. The four-meter-high installations are spread over the Issey Miyake flagship store in Milan and consist of ingenious stakes of metal supporting elements and thin transparent plastic thin pipes. Water and bubbles of air are forced through the pipes in an irregular rhythm. It looks dreamy and tranquil. Jólan van der Wiel: “But make no mistake! It was a pagan job to build, test and then ship these objects to Milan. They are fragile and vulnerable constructions and we are very happy that it all functions flawlessly. It is very special for me to work intensively with Issey Miyake and the management. It is a presentation that appeals to everyone. And the pleasure of making is immediately felt.“

‘Frida Pitcher Vase’ for Cor Unum, design Satyendra Pakhalé
Charlotte Landsheer, director and curator of Cor Unum:”This Frida Pitcher Vase is not made with the computer! Satyendra Pakhalé has been with us for a week and we have worked on the models endlessly before he was completely satisfied.” Satyendra Pakhalé: “This vase series is a ‘poetic analogy’ as a tribute to the great artist Frida Kahlo. Often design is devoid of symbolic meaning and therefore hardly connects with people. We wanted to create objects with warmth and a cultural connection. The vases at the end look very simple but we had to go through three prototype cycles to get the right control over the proportions to create meaningful contemporary objects!”

‘Contrast’ for Uniqka, design Debbie Wijskamp
Contrast is a collection of small storage units made in hard and soft vegetable tanned leather. By folding or wrinkling, the user can define the height and form of the product in various combinations. Debbie Wijskamp, designer of Contrast: “With some clients you are dealing with you feel a distance. But with Merve Parnas and Kerem Aris from Uniqka you definitely don’t feel that! Personal contact is always very important to me. That click must be there immediately. Especially since Contrast is a complicated product that looks simple at first sight. Making a hard bowl of leather by hand and then hand-stitching the soft leather upper part to it requires a lot of technical skill and patience. I am very satisfied with the collaboration process and the result!”
