Looking back at Milan by Jacob de Baan

By 23-04-2018

Like last year, Jacob de Baan made a selection from Milan Design Week presentations of Dutch designers and/or collectives for Dutch Design Daily. Jacob de Baan: “This time I paid particular attention to innovatie qualities, technical skills as well as market potential”

JAPTH / Belli brothers > Leading LED
JAPTH (Just A Perfect THing) is a new Dutch design label and collaborates with designers Richard Hutten, Yksi Ontwerp and the brothers Patrick and Riccardo Belli. Patrick and Riccardo Belli designed a range of lighting fixtures in which the latest possibilities and properties of LED-technology are leading. They consist of series of flat circular light modules that create a functional lighting.

Bibi Smit > Living material
Bibi Smit lives glass: ‘I have learned glassblowing -among others- from great design legend Willem Heesen and I am one of the few Dutch designers that has mastered the technique and processes of glass blowing myself. Glass is a soft, strong, and living material. In my imaginative designs I play with texture, color, light, reflection and movement. My series of black torso vases evokes associations with vast skies full of misty cloud strings.

Royal Delft / Flex Design > Augmented Blueware
Royal Delft CEO Henk Schouten and art director Joffrey Wallonker proudly show me their innovative ‘Augmented Blueware’ app. Joffrey Wallonker: “Together with FLEX / design and TWNKLS / Augmented Reality we have developed this app that shows the decoration of a hand-painted vase directly onto the elements of our service. It is a stunning 3d visualization technique, with which we reduce the distance between hand-painted Delft blue earthenware and modern tableware decoration.”

Alessi> Marcel Wanders > Brrr, Ahhh, Hmm, Grr, Shhh
Marcel Wanders was inspired by the 4 seasons and even added a fifth one. Under the names Brrr, Ahhh, Hmm, Grr & Shhh he developed 5 different home fragrances as well as accessories such as candles, candlesticks and dispensers. For the fifth season, the diffuser of the fragrance is a black lava natural stone. Marcel Wanders: ‘these fragrances are designed to express the cycle of the day, of the year and of the life’.

Jacob de Baan
Jacob de Baan is a passenger. He travels between Amsterdam and Istanbul, coming and going, flying, walking and biking on the Dutch canals or along the Bosphorus. He is a designer and he gets inspired by light. Twilight to dusk, morning to evening, natural light to artificial one, eventually reflected on the North Sea or on the Golden Horn. Jacob de Baan is art director of Heinen Delfts Blauw.
