Looking back at Milan by Jacob de Baan

By 17-04-2017

For Dutch Design Daily, Jacob de Baan has made a selection of four Dutch designers/collectives. Jacob de Baan: “I have cherry-picked designs that are not only conceptually strong but that have also been developed further to the extent of being marketable.”

Isabel Quiroga: fantasy world with depth
“Isabel’s work radiates a serene tranquility. Her designs are poetic, playful and far from garish. You are immediately pulled into her fantasy world and feel the depth. Even so, it concerns quite ordinary, functional products such as tables, vases and lamps.”

David Derksen: intriguing structures
“David Derksen’s sources of inspiration are mathematical patterns and physics principles. He made a choice from the wide offer of Baars & Bloemhoff, a wholesaler of decorative sheet material. He glues two layers of veneer back to back together, cuts out slats and builds intriguing structures which may serve as folding screens.”

Frank Tjepkema: an instant icon
“Frank Tjepkema searches the extreme limits of what’s possible. He is a virtuoso in 3D modeling and one of the results is Busk, a lighting fixture consisting of countless LED elements and joints and commissioned by Moooi. It is a stunning ellipsoid, reminiscent of the universe. Marcel Wanders already called it ‘an instant icon’.”

Geke Lensink & Jesse Visser: making a dream come true
“Sometimes, one needs stamina and perseverance to make a dream come true. This is certainly the case with the innovative furniture designs by Geke Lensink and Jesse Visser for the brand Brothers and Sons. They had to work on the designs over and over again before the final versions were ready. But now the collection is ready to be presented! The intelligent application of advanced manufacturing techniques has produced a series of comfortable chairs, tables and sofas for home and office.”

Jacob de Baan himself also participated in the Milan Design Week with his Zero Collection, a number of lighting designs for the Turkish design label Uniqka, at the location Design Language Talks in Tortona. In addition, he explained his vision of the design world, as he had previously done on Dutch Design Daily message, in the Design Language Talk under the title of ‘Design Galaxies’.  More > 06.04.2017
