Looking back at Salone del Mobile by David Heldt

By 11-09-2021

A different Salone, one with more time for each other, more fun and more media attention. “The press has more time and space to come by and write about us” says Nicole Uniquole, organizer of Masterly, satisfied. Outside I meet Giuseppina Flor, PR lady of Masterly and Valerio Castelli, founder of MoscaPartners, both seasoned Milanese salone organizers “This is how it should always be, time to see other presentations and time to go to parties” says Valerio. Giuseppina laughs “last night was late, how wonderful! Let’s hope it stays that way”.

The slowsalone is what Milan has been waiting for. It feels like calming down after a burnout. At last the city has time for itself again, attention to Milanese designers, for example, who for years were unjustly low-visibility. Tonight I meet some at a cocktail of the Italian label Daytona. “Italian designers often hide behind brands, self-initiated work is few and far between” says Davide Gramatica “it would be nice if that starts to change”. Later in the evening in Bar Basso there is not a Dutchman to be seen. At 2 a.m. the square is full as ever, but now with the Milanese scene. I speak to designers from Rome, Naples, and Milan. The Negroni tastes better than ever, as if more time has been spent on it.
