LUST winner BNO Piet Zwart Award 2017

By 31-10-2017

The design collective LUST received on 28 October the BNO Piet Zwart Award 2017 during the Award Show of the Dutch Design Awards.

Jury report
The jury elected LUST from thirty nominations as the winner because of the forerunner’s role the studio plays for a new generation. LUST has pushed technological boundaries, has continuously taken the lead in the search for applications of new technology and has proved that programming can be an essential part of a design solution. LUST’s aim has always been to humanize the inhuman, to lead it down to earth and to find the missing link between the digital and the physical.

With their choice, the jury aimed to stress the importance of an inquisitive and groundbreaking mentality. In addition, it stresses the importance of a tenacious attitude and the drive that are necessary to add new explorations to well-known practices over and over again and also to transfer that knowledge to new generations. This is the first time that a collective of designers is distinguished with the BNO Piet Zwart Award. A special tribute, all the more so because the founders have decided to stop with Lust in September 2017.

LUST
The core of LUST (a design studio with associated research department) is formed by Jeroen Barendse, Thomas Castro and Dimitri Nieuwenhuizen. The studio was founded in 1996 and creates work that moves on the cutting edge of classic graphic design, digital media, information technology and architecture. LUST acted as an important forerunner in the field of research into the ways in which humans can experience and study the world by means of digital techniques. Work by the design studio and the LUSTlab – set up in 2010 – was put on display at many international stages, among others at the MOMA, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Museum, the Walker Art Center Minneapolis, the Shanghai Biennale and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
