M+ annual review

By 06-07-2021

M+ is Hong Kong’s new Museum on visual culture, focusing on 20th and 21st century art, design, architecture and moving image. It will open in 2021. Thonik is developing a visual identity that works across the institution’s physical and digital platforms. The first result is out: the annual review.

M+ visual identity uses a range of mid-tone colours. These colours are selected to be tonally equal to 50% black. When they are used as backgrounds for text, black or white lettering will always be legible. The M+ colour wheel demonstrates the changes made to the primary colours to make a series of mid-tones to form the M+ colour set. By using this selection criteria, Thonik developed a huge range of colours, equivalent to about 1000 Pantone colours.

The annual report is the first physical outcome of the new identity. With orange as a spot colour added to the cmyk printing process the colours are shown in pattern-pages that divide the different sections of the report.
