Mask

By 11-03-2017

When during the broadcast of Zomergasten (Summer Guests) trend watcher Lidewij Edelkoort was asked what she thought would be the attention-getter in the coming years, she replied: masks.

Aatjan Renders: “In general, masks are used to conceal something but a mask can also refer to an abstract way of disguising. On social media, for example, it is customary to show almost all kinds of positive or successful aspects of yourself. Edelkoort said that she expects this trend to continue and that people will keep pretending to be different than they really are.

“For the ‘Mask’ series I asked artists to create a mask. At first it seems as if the mask is worn to conceal the wearer’s identity, but in fact it is a magnification of it. Every mask is a reflection of the ideas that the creator has about the essence and the effect of a mask. Some people consider it a means to hide themselves behind, whereas others use it deliberately to attract the attention. Anyway, the result is a personal series of portraits.”
