New masters in a new golden age

In 25 period rooms Old Masters encounter Dutch Design. Nicole Uniquole has allocated a historical painting to each of the participating designers, photographers and artists. Drawing on the painting for inspiration, today’s masters have created completely new works, on display in a perfect alliance of passion for craftsmanship and love of beauty.

Personal Narratives
Ute van der Plaats has immersed herself in the life of Amalia van Solms. As she fashions her porcelain jewellery, she wonders what her muse, seventeenth-century style icon Amalia would make of her work. Cabinetmaker Wilfred Kalf dissected Weenix’s rich hunting still life to learn about texture and to find special wood from The Hague to create new work. Each of the Dutch Designers has a story to tell about their exhibit, whether ceramic, gold, jewelry, porcelain or glass. Autonomous works bring Old Masters to life in photography, clothing, textiles, costume, couture, carpet, wall coverings, bags, sneakers, leather, cutlery and light.

Joyful Curiosity
Among the highlights of this journey of discovery through a succession of period rooms are the Yellow Room, Gentleman’s Lounge, Vault Basement, Lace Room, Dressing Room, Dining Room and Floral Room. Exhibitors are on hand to share their ideas with visitors. Historical paintings can be viewed from close by. New designs are on sale. And visitors are invited to explore the royal city: a free booklet – Curator’s Choice – available at the entrance, presents venues in The Hague which offer the finest items.
