MaterialDistrict Utrecht – Day 3

By 07-04-2022

MaterialDistrict Utrecht is the annual event for material specifiers from all sectors of spatial design. With 125 exhibitors, an exhibition with 250 materials and a lecture programme with 50 speakers, MaterialDistrict Utrecht is full of material inspiration. Today we present some of the exhibitors.

Waterweg | Building materials from dredge
Waterweg is developing building materials from dredged sediments. Dredge is an abundant and expensive waste stream, that unfortunately brings along a lot of CO2 emissions, while it is only applied for low value applications. We want to show that dredge can have a high-quality application as well. Our first product under development is a water permeable tile. Next to the problem of a dredge abundance we also tackle the problem of floods after heavy rainfall in urban areas. In the future we aspire to make different building products such as cladding and street furniture.

IHOG | Academie Minerva | Hemp | Magnesium | Potato
IHOG (Innovatie Hub Oost-Groningen) is a cooperation of three companies based in the Province of Groningen: HempFlax, Nedmag and Avebe. Lecturers/researchers and students of the Department of Design and Master MADAM of Academie Minerva (Hanzehogeschool Groningen) are exploring the potential of these local materials in different shapes and combinations. Experiments with pressing techniques have resulted in a series of samples and prototypes.

Studio GROOVIDO | Castinglan
Clusters and stems expands in the space incorporating the surroundings. The unpredictability of the casting technique developed using expanded glass blocks as mould, in fact, trick the human eye, presenting a hybrid aesthetic. The material questions the limit between natural and artificial in the domestic realm.

Studio Lotte Douwes | Circular collection and Lamp&Socket
Studio Lotte Douwes has a strong focus on high-quality ceramic designs and circular production methods. The collections Lotte designs play with the concept of space. Such as the new Lamp&Socket Rim collection. This pendant lamp and socket put power and electricity exactly where you need it and therefore support flexible use of space. The natural colours and tactile quality invite you to touch them. Studio Lotte Douwes researches circular use of raw materials and ceramic waste, from which the Circular Collection was created. A selection of research and designs will be shown.

Yksi Expo | Designing for Torwash
Torwash is the name of the technology developed by TNO. With a new application of this technology, you can completely dissolve and break down bioplastics (such as PLA), after which they can be used again. This offers designers opportunities to design composites and composite products that can still be fully recycled. Studio GROOVIDO, Polina Baikina and the design lab Envisions set to work to help TNO take the next step in this development.
