MaterialDistrict Utrecht – Day 2
MaterialDistrict Utrecht is the annual event for material specifiers from all sectors of spatial design. With 125 exhibitors, an exhibition with 250 materials and a lecture programme with 50 speakers, MaterialDistrict Utrecht is full of material inspiration. Today we present some of the exhibitors.
Studio Lisa Ortsen | Turmeric as ‘mood booster’
Turmeric is a special herb, to which healing powers are attributed. The applicability of turmeric, or yellow root as it is also called, intrigues me. The question that puzzles me: have we reached the limit or can we use its healing power in different ways still? Ways that tingle our senses or that makes us use our senses in ways we couldn’t comprehend till now? Turmeric has a full ocher yellow colour. Scientific research shows that colours can influence the psyche of a person. This colour can improve your concentration, your memory and your mood. A combination of functionality and beauty.

Studio Jeroen Wand | Laminated coffee table
Pieces of veneer are pressed together to form a sturdy whole. The technique stems from the industrial process of laminating where a sheet of veneer is used to cover the less attractive material underneath. Here, veneer is used throughout the whole object. By pressing the different layers of veneer together in a specific mould, combined with solid wooden parts, the material is shaped and gains its strength. The manual process allows for freedom in arranging the different parts of veneer, where each object can have an individual, unique structure.

Studio LaVina | Fragmental
‘Fragmental’ is a light sculpture made with a composite that could be recycled and separated into the original materials without disassembly. Tests with the Torwash technology, developed by TNO, made it possible to separate this composite into the original raw materials, which could then be reused. This applied to the cellulose from the nettle, the lactic acid from PLA and the metals. Chemical recycling thus enables us to maintain the quality of materials and make production circular.

Studio Simone Post | Vlisco recycled carpets
‘Vlisco Recycled Carpets’ builds on extensive material research Simone Post initiated into the leftover textiles of Vlisco, a Netherlands-based textile manufacturer of high-end wax-printed fabrics mainly exported to Africa. Simone Post has developed a line of high-quality carpets using Vlisco’s rejects. Inspired by the side view of the large rolls used to store and transport the textiles a unique product is created each and every time. The carpets have been acquired by several museums including the Utrecht Centraal Museum, Vitra Design Museum and Museum für Völkerkunde Hamburg.

Dirty Sand | Dirty Sand
Incineration of household waste is an internationally recognized waste processing treatment. However, this process generates a new residue of unburned particles and ashes that remain on the bottom of the incinerator. This residue is known as bottom ash. Each individual generates 50kg of bottom ash residue per year, resulting in overloaded landfills and groundwater pollution. Dirty Sand is a research project studying the potential of bottom ash as a primary resource for developing new materials. The research has led to a series of interior tiles made from incinerated household waste.

Iris Amber Design | Living materials
Living Materials explores the potential of auxetic materials. Due to their geometric structures the materials become thicker when stretched, rather than thinner like most materials. The project dives into the topic of pre-programming behavior and shape and researches how the materials can respond to their environment. This adaptability can result in more value and function and a reduction in the quantity of materials and products necessary. Potential applications range from window decoration with integrated solar panels that optimally facing the sun, to a jacket that respond to the seasons.
