Metal Cars

By 11-09-2020

Designer Maarten Olden wanted to create a miniature car by using the steel plate application in the SolidWorks program. It was his aim to demonstrate his expertise in designing and constructing with sheet steel. The concept stems from the possibility to bend steel plate with a bending machine or sheet bender and have only straight lines as a result.

Following this method, he has realized a refined small car of twelve centimeters in length, carried out in 0.6 mm stainless sheet steel. Despite the small scale and the limited technique of ‘putting down’ and ‘bending’ steel plate, it has become a very detailed model.

“Together with the photography of Thomas van Schaik and the styling of Eddy Frings, a project has been realized with the cars and architecture as the theme. In fact, the idea is to use these cars to attract new customers in the design world and the technical angle.”

Maarten Olden has made ‘automotive’ designs before, e.g. his series ‘Spliners’.
