Milan 2017 in retrospect by Katja Lucas #1

By 24-04-2017

Like many other design lovers, Katja Lucas (program manager Dutch Design Week) visited the Milan Design Week 2017 two weeks ago. For Dutch Design Daily she selected a number of Dutch designers/collectives which particularly drew her attention. Today the first part of her selection.

Fuori Salone
The Salone del Mobile Internazionale, one of the largest furniture fairs in the world, took place in Milan from 4 up to and including 9 April 2017. More than 200 Dutch designers in all were represented at various locations in the city. Various designers and organizations showed presentations and programs in the FuoriSalone, the offside program.

Baars & Bloemhoff
For the second edition of its ‘Transitions’ project, Baars & Bloemhoff once again challenged six young Dutch designers to explore its materials and transform them into a design collection. The work of David Derksen, Sabine Marcelis, Klaas Kuiken, Daphna Laurens, Paul Heijnen and RENS was presented on a brand-new location full of atmosphere and abandoned beauty. [Ventura Centrale]

Maarten Baas & Lensvelt
This year Lensvelt teamed up with Maarten Baas. Together they designed eight unique chairs. The collaboration came about thanks to the intervention of van der Zwaag. This year Lensvelt and Maarten Baas are the winners of the Milano Design Award for the best concept. [Ventura Lambrate]
Up to 24 September, their presentation ‘May I Have Your Attention Please?’ is also on display in the Groninger Museum as part of the Baas’ solo exhibition: ‘Hide & Seek’.

Studio Thier&vanDaalen
Iris van Daalen and Ruben Thier showed new objects, jewelry and their Vapour Light lamp in the former garage Autofficina. [Ventura Lambrate]

Studio Plott
Rudi Boiten and Mireille Burger showed research results of an experiment with 3D printing technique and textiles. The presentation was in the Autofficina garage. [Ventura Lambrate]

Roos Soetekouw
Roos Soetekouw presented the collection Malabar. This is an ode to the Malabar Tree Nymph butterfly and it consists of tea towels, cushions, blankets and carpets. [Ventura Lambrate]

Sigrid Calon
The exhibition ‘Designing Grand Tour’ is a project of Torri Lana. The weaver invited international designers for a ‘journey’ in which culture, experience, production, process, aesthetics and creativity were explored. Rubbetino is going to print a book about it. With Sigrid Calon and others. [Zona Tortona – Design Language]

Dutch Invertuals Party
Once again Dutch Invertuals was one of the highlights in Milan; this year’s theme was ‘Harvest’: how do alternative energy sources change our lifestyles? Curator Wendy Plomp again managed to realize a smashing party on the Friday night. [Isola Design District]

Social Label/Design Works
Design Works, the beautiful and meaningful publication of Social Label, was launched on Friday. The enthusiastic initiators Petra Janssen and Simone Kramer give with their publication input for a different view of work and society through the power of design and communication.
