Mission 2030 – Illustrated light installation

By 23-05-2019

Nominated for European Design Awards 2019
Category Corporate Illustration

In the Netherlands, buildings are responsible for 40% of the country’s total carbon emissions. ABN AMRO finances about 10% of the country’s real estate. This means they have the opportunity to drastically reduce their carbon footprint. This is why they set a goal for 2030: to ensure that all homes and offices they help finance have an energy label A on average. They call it ‘Mission 2030’.

Brandbase was asked to help design a unique experience during the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament with over 100,000 visitors. Brandbase approached Artbox with the idea to create a laser-cut light installation. Artbox then asked Sjoerd Verbeek to create the illustrations for this installation, showing the sustainability problems and the goals and solutions that Mission 2030 wants to accomplish.

Sjoerd Verbeek: ‘The illustrations were turned into a lampshade to create a spectacular display of light and shadow on the walls. Visitors wore headphones and listened to an explanation of Mission2030 while walking around inside the installation. Each side of the lampshade visualizes multiple stories about sustainable problems and their solutions. Since the illustrations are lasercut out of wood I couldn’t use lines or strokes smaller than 5 millimeter. That’s why I used an iconic art style with recognizable shapes and bold strokes.’
