Monument is a fanzine dedicated to the ‘Dutch Wave’, a group of Dutch designers that caused an international furor around the latest turn of the century. Each song is dedicated to one single designer or a designer duo. In this second issue, the central point of interest is the work of the Keupr/van Bentm duo, which consists of Michiel Keuper and Francisco van Benthum. Between 1997 and 2001 they challenged the fashion industry with their surprising and colorful statement collections. Monument is a project of stylist Mary-Lou Berkulin and graphic designer Karen van der Kraats.
Monument is an independent magazine that focuses on Dutch Fashion Design from around the turn of the century. It arose from a frustration and a fascination for the fact that fashion media often focus only on the future; what are we going to do next season, what are the latest collections going to show us? Fashion magazines show the latest trends and designs. Initiator Mary-Lou Berkulin: “Precisely in this time of acceleration and supposed innovation in fashion I thought it would be exciting to work with old clothes from designers who inspired me during my study at the fashion academy. Monument encourages contemplation and reflection on the current state of the rampant system”.
