The Netherlands Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai

By 05-10-2021

New, organic solar panels on the roof of The Netherlands Pavilion.

From the 1st of October onwards, for 6 months, the Expo 2020 Dubai is open to visitors from around the world. The Netherlands Pavilion, situated in the Sustainability District, features Marjan van Aubel Studio’s colourful solar-panelled roof.

When entering the pavilion, visitors will be immersed in rays of coloured light. The skylights, made out of lightweight organic transparent solar cells (OPV), are circular and of non-toxic materials. By combining technology, aesthetics and sustainable materials, the studio has created the solar panels of the future.

The Pavilion
The Netherlands Pavilion, also known as The Dutch Biotope designed by V8 Architects, is a temporary circular climate system where water, energy and food solutions are connected. It shows how the three sectors can be linked to develop specialised integrated solutions and thereby create a more sustainable world. The unique solar panels by Marjan van Aubel collect energy from Dubai’s sun rays to power the pavilion. The coloured ASCA® OPV, a third-generation solar technology, is printed on thin foils and is produced in a sustainable manner. The solar panels allow sunlight into the pavilion and filter the right spectrum of light which the edible plants on the food cone use for photosynthesis.

Award
The Netherlands Pavilion is the proud winner of the “Sustainable Construction Project of the Year” award, together with Expomobilia, V8 Architects, Dutch Dubai and many more.
