The New Age of Trichology

By 10-10-2018

An innovative and sustainable research project, where human hair waste is recycled and applied in material and product design.

The project focuses on the high tensile strength of hair. Based on traditional techniques, Sanne Visser developed a method to make rope from hair by first spinning it into yarn. This was done in collaboration with spinners, rope makers and textile workers. Products that have emerged to date include climbing ropes, crocheted bags and swings.

Sanne Visser is a Dutch designer who currently works and lives in London. A material explorer, researcher and maker, graduated with the masters Material Futures at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. Her main interests as a designer are material innovation, sustainability and future thinking. The production process is highly important in her work, where craft meets innovation and system design.
