DDW 2020 – New Melancholy by Lidewij Edelkoort

By 17-10-2020

During Dutch Design Week 2020, Dutch Design Daily shows a live activity on location every day, today the double exhibition New Melancholy by Lidewij Edelkoort in Van Abbemuseum and Kazerne.

Art and design brought together around a sense of melancholy. From 16 October 2020, the penetrating exhibition New Melancholy, spread over Van Abbemuseum and Home of Design Kazerne in Eindhoven, will be on display. The exhibitions combine works of art from the museum with contemporary design that Lidewij Edelkoort has collected during her career. The works that are shown radiate a spirit and atmosphere of melancholy, in agreement with the present time of keeping a distance and reflection. The visitor experiences how design and art can offer reflection and perspective, especially at the time of a pandemic.

The double exhibition in the Van Abbemuseum and the Kazerne shows melancholic work from the Edelkoort collection and from the museum, a melancholy carried by humor and distance from the subject. Bringing together contemporary art and design enables the visitor to encounter unexpected dialogues, think, for example, of serial objects such as the thick-bellied burnt dresser by Maarten Baas on top of which are a subdued black twilight lamp by Kiki van Eijk and a desolate bronze key from Studio Job, enhanced by the serial black surfaces of Allan McCollum. Charles Esche: “New Melancholy pretends not to know what our lives will post-Covid-19 be like. What it does do is to give space to the sense of emptiness that scares us right now and at the same time to explore and question that new space. The audience is taken on an emotional journey during which they are not so much given answers, but rather acquire experiences that help them to understand where we are now. To grope and find from there the way forward.
