In 2021 the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science awarded the Netherlands Higher Education Premium for the first time, to recognise and endorse the efforts of the best teams in higher education. The Ministry launched a competition for the design of a trophy for the prizewinners. The design competition was won by Team ‘Design Lenz’, consisting of Eva Jonkers, Lin Zhou and Sanne ten Hoopen, three bachelor students of the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, Technical University Delft.

Their trophy, called ‘New Spark’, symbolizes the spark of passion for innovation and team efforts in the eyes of the prize-winning educators. Eva, Lin and Sanne oversaw the production process of the trophies for the first, second and third place of each category, in the form of a gold, silver or bronze iris in a glass-made eye on a dark marble base. The spark, the topical point of the design, consists of a magnetic powder radiating from the central iris. After months of work, the trophies were presented to the prize winners during an award ceremony that took place on 1 March.
