OBJECT Rotterdam – New talent

By 23-05-2022

Report by Sophie Gijsbers

From May 20 to 22, the HAKA building opened its doors again for design fair OBJECT. Here OBJECT offered a stage to various design labels, well-known designers and new talents. “Behind the scenes, a new generation is working very hard,” says Anne van der Zwaag, “young designers are very driven to conquer a place in the market and have not been idle lately, the energy is splashing. This year it was exactly ten years ago that Anne van der Zwaag took over the design fair. For this reason, all OBJECT visitors had free admission to the Euromast.

For Dutch Design Daily I made a selection of 6 new talents that particularly caught my attention.

Sina Dyks
Collection Stimuli Wiring System is inspired by the friction, tension and richness of our own wiring system that takes place in our bodies and affects our brains. Sina Dyks demonstrates material knowledge and technical innovation with her textile works. By upcycling plastic, she creates her yarn. She has also designed her own program for the loom. By using steam, the yarn emerges in specific places, making the woven surface three-dimensional. www.sinadyks.com

Atelier Emski
Emmy van de Grift created the work Stil nr.2 by means of the craft of stained glass. With the sunlight through the colored glass, the work stood out immediately. Emmy is inspired by patterns in nature. The work is a quest to capture movement and fluidity in still images. Their aim is to create art where imperfection and handicraft provide charm, art that cannot be reproduced by machines. www.atelieremski.nl

Joni Veizaj
With the work “dat kan mijn kleine nichtje ook” (my little niece can do that too) Joni Veizaj wants to let the viewer experience the joy of making. By converting crafting techniques to production techniques Joni wants to show the crafting atmosphere in his furniture. This puts the statement ‘my little niece can do that too’ in a different light, making the viewer wonder if that comment is as negative as it seems. www.joniveizaj.nl

Adinda Rensen
‘Handle with care’ is a collection of ceramic wall ornaments inspired by ceiling decorations from the past. This project was born out of Adinda Rensen’s interest in quality and her belief that people can have a valuable connection with their belongings that causes them to handle them with care. Thus, emotional sustainability would be the key to product sustainability. www.adindarensen.nl

ZOWA – Finsa
These cubes are held together solely by visible connections such as straps. These cubes are the result of research into joining 4 plates without the use of glue or other known connections. They show the possibilities of joining different materials, which does not have to be limited to cubes. www.apartofzowa.com

Soft steel by Rik van Mierlo
The lamps by Rik van Mierlo exude tranquility with their dynamic simplicity. With his designs, Rik van Mierlo aims to redefine the visual language of products into unique objects for both mass production and limited editions. www.rikvanmierlo.nl
