Ode to knitting and weaving

By 16-12-2022

TextielMuseum launches new plaids and tea towels designed by Sigrid Calon

Ode to knitting
With the plaids, Sigrid Calon gives a microscopic glimpse into the technique of knitting: the pattern on the plaid is an enlarged structure of a knitted fabric, made up of all the little Vs.  The plaids are made with the TextielLab’s very latest circular knitting machine. With this machine, originally developed for making mattresses, you knit a double-layer fabric in one go, which can be stuffed inside. The filling is only applied in some places in the design, making the pattern almost three-dimensional. In the blink of an eye, you can bring a completely new atmosphere into the living room because the plaid has both a colourful and a neutral side.

Ode to weaving
Sigrid Calon’s new tea towels are an ode to weaving, the technique that once made Tilburg’s textile industry big. Inspired by authentic Tilburg weaves from the museum collection, she created a contemporary interplay of texture and colour. The tea towels contain no less than 38 different weaves, including some from the historical Tilburg weaving books and a number of self-developed weaves. The frayed edge at the beginning and end of the tea towel is deliberately unfinished, as it gives a nice insight into the making process. It allows you to see exactly which yarns and colours were used at each spot.

The new tea towels and plaids are available in the museum shop and via by.textielmuseum.nl
