On the shoulders of Giants

By 06-10-2022

With a real ‘Jobtocht’, the new artwork by Job Smeets & Studio Job was handed over to the municipality of Weert last Saturday. The seven-metre-high handmade bronze sculpture is one of Studio Job’s largest ever works and pays tribute to Weert’s industrial history.

In 2020, Job Smeets & Studio Job was commissioned by the municipality of Weert to realise a sculpture using parts of the old loading and unloading crane of the former Coöperatiegebouwen Landbouwbelang on the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal. The crane is industrial heritage and an important example of Weert’s economic development and prosperity in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Raised in Weert, internationally renowned artist/designer Job Smeets creates contemporary design at the interface of art and design, exciting and narrative, humorous with a dark edge, robust and multiform.

Forever Endeavour
The new monumental artwork is part of a ‘Weert triptych’ that former Weert resident Job Smeets is completing this year. In this context, Museum W is showing the exhibition ‘Forever Endeavour’, on view until 30 October. This anything but ‘classic’ design exhibition shows a mix of influences that Smeets underwent in his life. From his ‘hometown’ Weert to world cities like Paris, Antwerp, New York and Milan. The result is a shimmering and very personal exhibition.
