One and a half meters museum

By 30-06-2020

The Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar asked the artists collective Circus Engelbregt to think about the one and a half meters museum.

Artists Martijn Engelbregt, Allard Medema, Nikki Loef and Bordjesman (Sjoerd Kaandorp) examined the reception, the protocols to be followed, and the management of the one-way traffic in the museum. They have been specializing in ‘disruptive connection’ for years; in the ever-changing forest of rules in these days, this is all the more welcome. When people feel relaxed, they make room for themselves and for each other more easily which means that therefore less regulation is needed.

Their interventions bring the visitors in a cheerful mood so that they can enjoy the museum to the full. Upon entering the hall, the visitor finds himself/herself in an oasis of plants and has the opportunity for a relaxing hand massage. Although the museum is a one-way street, it has succeeded in minimizing the use of  arrows and prohibition signs and guiding the visitors through the building with a gentle hand. Pink calligraphed texts indicate how much space there is in a room for how many ‘people’ and indications have been taken through the pleasantness mill. So it doesn’t say: “It is forbidden to touch the works of art” but ” Let yourself be touched but don’t touch anything”. And: “Up to maximally 20 people” becomes: “Room for 20 people”. From 16 June onwards, ‘people’ can give another person a hug with the Remote Hug installation (Allard Medema) from an appropriate distance.

Wellness Nietes can be experienced until a yet unknown date in the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar.
