Paul Mijksenaar Award for Puccini Method

By 13-04-2018

The fourth Paul Mijksenaar Design for Function Award has been granted to the City of Amsterdam for its ‘Puccini Method’ for the design and layout of public space.
The award was presented on Friday 6 April 2018 at Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam and the Puccini Method
The Puccini method was developed to improve the quality of the characteristic streets of Amsterdam. It aims for high quality in terms of used materials, interrelatedness and detailed construction.

The method is also intended to stop the cluttering that has been going on in certain districts as well as to recreate them in a consistent and uniform style that can be implemented and maintained more efficiently.

‘Over the past ten years, the aesthetics of the Amsterdam streets increasingly caught my eye,’ says Paul Mijksenaar. ‘The Puccini Handbook reads like a manual, but one with a striking number of alternatives, also for special spaces such as squares and parks.’

About the Award
The Paul Mijksenaar Design for Function Award recognizes often anonymous design that focuses on usability. Previous award winners include [Hugo Bollen for his] signposted cycle network (2013) and IKEA for its assembly/instruction manuals (2015).
