Dutch Design Heritage
Piet Hein Eek (1967), designer, producer

Eek graduated from the Eindhoven Academy of Industrial Design in 1990 with a cabinet made out of scrap wood. He wanted to draw attention to the beauty of used materials and wanted to distance himself from slick and polished design. His cabinets and pavilions were warmly welcomed by the press and this success led to the establishment of a small independent factory with Norbert (Nob) Ruijgrok in 1993. There they also developed a series of aluminium furniture. He received the Incentive Prize in design by the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK) in 1993.
