Place a stone

By 06-10-2016

Memorial for the victims of the shooting on May 7th, 1945 at the Dam Square in Amsterdam.

Collective commemoration
Between June 2015 and March 2016, 15,509 stones were placed on the website plaatseensteen.nl with which the victims’ names were written. Commemorating the dead is given a new meaning by actively involving people in the development and realization of this unique memorial. Each visitor was invited to place one small stone per name and to replace another. As a result, the typeface was growing continually. More and more stones were placed and replaced, and more decisions were made: where should a letter be bigger, or fatter, or how can a letter become more readable? By being allowed to place only one stone and replacing another, the typeface transformed.

The structure of the names with a row of bricks per letter evolved first. The more visitors came and the more stones were placed, the more joint decisions were made: where should the letter be larger and where thicker? Just by replacing one single stone, the visitors made the typeface grow and change. In March 2016, the participatory website was discontinued and the design finished. The collective digital design will be transferred into stone and realized at the Dam Square. On May 7, 2016, the memorial was opened officially at the Dam.
