Playing with glass

By 29-01-2021

“Glass is a strange and fascinating material”, says Nienke Sikkema. “When it’s cold it is static, inaccessible and difficult to work with. But with hot glass the possibilities are endless. You can blow it up, cut it, pull it, swing it and so much more”.

“Glassblowing is hard to learn and it can take years, but once you learn to understand it you can really play with it” says Nienke. “Then a world full of colors and shapes opens itself to you”. That’s why all of her designs derive from this ‘playing with glass’.

“I let the glass drip, stack it and roll it into a candleholder or sculpt animals with it. As long as the glass allows it and I don’t have to force it. Shape, color, transparency and shimmer, I try to use all the qualities that glass possesses in my designs. Hopefully this way people will recognize the fun of the making process in the objects that emerge from it”.
