Polarized Lights

By 19-11-2019

In the workshop of Leerdam, Klaas Kuiken has worked on a series of glass light objects, Polarized Lights.

The light objects are made in cast iron molds. The cast iron molds in turn consist of shapes that he cut out of Styrofoam. He uses the texture of the Styrofoam and the ridges of the hot wire as a design element in the molds.

The glass that is then blown into the molds in an artisanal way thus assumes the texture of the Styrofoam. This creates surprising lighting effects and a gorgeous amalgamation of organic fragile material and a robust industrial visual language.
