The portraits by Frank Ruiter

By 26-02-2019

The portraits by Frank Ruiter (1978, self-taught) are powerful and apparently simple. The character and personality of the person portrayed is always the guiding principle. Characteristic of his work is the stillness and the targeted use of natural light, which contributes to the realistic character of his photographs. Frank is constantly searching for ‘beautiful light’ and playing with the incidence of light and shadow.

The people portrayed come from all walks and ranks of society and are portrayed in a dignified and realistic manner. When viewing his photographs, the mutual trust between the model and the photographer is almost tangible. Before he starts photographing, there is always a (preferably long) conversation, without the camera, and he casually starts photographing. This fluent way of working enables him to create moments that cannot be anticipated in advance.

Since last summer, Frank has been working with the intention of photographing his family more often and in particular of capturing the ‘smallness ’of his children. Obviously while making use of natural and ‘present’ light. Therefore, the fact that four of the submitted images are photographs of his family makes this nomination extra special.

Nominated for the Dutch Photographers (DuPho) SO Award 2019
