Post Blocks / Soft Building Blocks

By 18-11-2022

They look very appealing and inviting, the wooden play blocks with holes from which a group of brightly colored ropes wriggle themselves a way out like serpents.

These seating and play elements that Simone Post designed for primary school Kindcentrum de Tierentijn Tilburg, refer to the different textile techniques that this school focuses on. The exciting open-end material invites to build, play, knot, weave, embroider, wrap and explore.

Envisions, the design agency in Eindhoven, designed a rope wall for this school and asked Simone Post to design something as well. She came up with wooden play blocks with friendly rounded corners and covered with soft Forbo-linoleum. The cables and ropes are made from leftover textiles from Febrik/Kvadrat and resemble giant candy chains, ingeniously knotted fishing ropes or snakes with a colorful print.

‘To create the different ropes, Post uses all kinds of traditional textile techniques, such as a macramé knotting technique and the twisting or braiding of Scooby Doo ropes. It inspires children to play, knot or weave with the ropes and get acquainted with textiles’.

Tests show that primary school students of all ages each work with the blocks in a different, enthusiastic way; they create imaginative constructions by stacking the blocks, they embroider different dot patterns or weave, braid and tie the blocks together with the ropes. And you can also sit or climb on the blocks or clamber through it.

Finally, it is handy that all textile tubes fit through the one large hole in the sit-play blocks, so that you can store them. The 2.0 boxes can be customised for schools, libraries, museums, hospitals or other locations.
