Rush Print

By 03-11-2021

Rush Print is an annual publication practise, text-edited & graphic-designed by graduating (senior) participants of Graphic Design Arnhem (GDA), a bachelor course of Graphic design at ArtEZ institute of the Arts. Since 2020 November, there is new issue coming out in Summer/Fall every year and each issue has a different topic around typography or its contemporary features. Rush Print aims to deliver momentary anecdotes and mundane concerns of GDA participants who express their (dis)oriented learning in certain manner.

Rush Print #0 – bad type
The inaugural issue ‘Rush Print 0 – bad type’ focuses on the topic of ‘Bad Type’, initiated by Dong Bin Han & Benjamin McMillan . A loose synonym of ‘bad’ in this issue was ‘amateur or ugly’ which was what contributors delivered as a student. The content ranges from interviews, workshops and anecdotes with GDA participants. The entire publication is typeset in student-made typefaces so the book also functions as a type specimen.

Rush Print #1 – Dingding
The current Issue #1 is a collection of various techniques of the ornamental and symbolic shaping of the dingbat. The last edition, Rush Print #0, was all about bad type and the conflict between what is seen as bad or good typography. This issue consisted of various interviews and examples from the Graphic Design students of ArtEZ Arnhem. For this issue, we looked at typographical objects other than letter-shapes. The dingbat and its histories became a point of entry to combine our interests in typography and non-linguistic communication through illustration, patterns and stickers. Dingbats come in sets of the same genre or feel. From tailpieces, fleurons, emoticons, symbols, objects etc.

Exhibition Seoul
From September 3rd to October 3rd, there was an exhibition ‘Rush Print Soy Stencil’ at Mudaeruk Seoul. it is made out of contributions by Benjamin McMillan, Areum Hwang, Helena Hesselink, Jungmin Lee, Summer Lee, Cheawon Shin, Zhizhong Keene, Jenna Bae, Sue Choi, and organisation by Dong Bin Han, 2020 graduate of Graphic Design Arnhem. In addition to distributing books at the Korean venue, one of the first asian booksellers RP have contacted, this event aimed to showcase two publications Rush Print and Soy Stencil and individual works of contributors of both publications in exhibition setup.
