Setting the Pace

By 28-09-2016

Since the Treasury-Federal Reserve Accord in 1951, the Federal Reserve (Fed) has gained increased power to manipulate the interest rate. This interactive data visualisation by Clever°Franke and WSJ Custom Studio’s shows the effect the Fed has had on economic markets by controlling rates and highlights historical milestones over the last 50 years.

Because of the complex nature of the content, we offer the user multiple entries to gather perspectives. The narrative-driven visualisation makes it very easy for the user to switch between the narrative presented by the milestones and the more free-form exploration mode with the scrubber.

Users can scroll through the visualisation by either using the scrubber or with the next/previous arrows. At any point in time the various rates (e.g. 10-Year Treasury Yield vs. Inflation) are comparable on a per-month basis. When viewing a milestone event this information is quite literally in the background so users can compare the before and after impact of an event on the rate lines of their interest.
