Sex Only – Max Kisman Diary Documents 1987-2017

By 12-04-2018

This is Max Kisman’s personal selection of erotic drawings from the diaries he has been keeping for over 30 years. The illustrations are accompanied by reflections on love, sex and relationships. ‘Sex Only’ shows how desire, lust and pleasure are initiate the of imagination. The exhibition is on at the Museum Meermanno in Den Haag until 10 June and you can also get the book, published by SubQ.

The book and the exhibition contain only a small selection from the 20,000 diary drawings from Kisman’s notebooks. He writes and draws in a reflective, reporting way about what is going on in his life. Work, family, friends, women, desires and dreams are captured in his drawings. It doesn’t really matter what he draws every day, as long as he draws anything that marks a moment.

The leitmotif in the selection is the desire for physical interaction and emotional affection. In the exhibition, enlarged diary drawings are accompanied by original books and drawings and four unique murals. It is clear what role sex plays in life: it is a driving force to keep moving and to create.
