SHIFT

SHIFT – A refined, architectonic family of crystal carafes that come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. One is robust and squat, another elegant and slender. But these individualized carafes are similar in their construction. They consist of a straight, transparent cylinder at the bottom, an elegant, narrowed neck in the middle, and a transparent crystal “collar” on top.

The objects Brekveld designed stay true to the well-known shape of the archetypical carafe, but subtle details lend these carafes a unique character. The designer plays with the shape by adding slight kinks between the collar, neck and bottom of the bottle. The slight shift that occurs from one plane to the next interrupts the smooth shape, creating a unique silhouette. Lining up the sandblasted material against the transparent part of the carafe reinforces the contrast between the matte, rough, and industrial versus the shiny, sleek, and transparent.

The characters in this family of carafes could hold water, oil, wine or cognac, but are also simply beautiful objects to behold.
