Sistaaz of the Castle

By 07-07-2016

Photographer Jan Hoek and fashion designer Duran Lantink present Sistaaz of the Castle, a project around the colorful looks of transgender sex workers parading through the streets of Cape Town, South Africa. Hoek and Lantink created a photo series and a fashion collection based on these sex workers’ fashionable appearances and their ability to turn everything they find into the most exuberant creations. The local sex worker organization S.W.E.A.T. gave Jan and Duran ample scope to meet and collaborate with their transgender support group Sistaazhood. For this project Jan and Duran zoom in on six girls that they met there: Coco (25), Cleopatra (23), Sulaiga (30), Gabby (29), Flavinia (33) and Joan Collins (57). Jan Hoek made documentary photos of the girls, their lives and their outfits. These documentary photos serve as the lookbook for the collection of Duran Lantink. In South Africa transgender sex workers only make the news as a perpetrator or as a victim and it is the express wish of the girls of Sistaazhood to have positive media coverage.
