Sketches in space

By 26-12-2020

Tijs Rooijakkers creates large-scale sculptures that look like sketches in space. Flowing naturally, they reveal the hidden potential of a place. With his work Tijs Rooijakkers wants to amaze people and make them look at the world around them with wonder and an open mind.

As a visual artist, Tijs Rooijakkers is fascinated by processes, by how things arise and transform. That magical moment where something transitions from nothing to something, from 0 to 1. Where time becomes fluid and opposites blend: past and future, stillness and movement, adventure and safety. In his spatial stills, he plays with these contrasts and thus creates a multidimensional world.

In the past 15 years, Tijs Rooijakkers has made many sculptures and installations in public space, museums and public buildings. Often by involving the audience, such as with the award-winning community art project Woensel Supertoll! in Eindhoven. And always by stretching the boundaries of what is technically possible by experimenting with new materials and constructions. In recent years he has focused more on permanent and large-scale commissioned work, such as the artistic edge security project Stillleven at the Westfriesgasthuis in Hoorn and the gravity-defying sculpture Leap into the Deep on the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology.

Atelier
Tijs Rooijakkers’ studio is located on Sectie-C, the creative district in Eindhoven-East. Together with fellow artist Gijs van Bon, he transformed a large warehouse into a breeding ground and workspace for 12 professional artists and designers: Oost-C.
