SOTA

By 20-02-2023

SOTA is a sustainable sneaker featuring a seamless knit upper and completely deconstructable sole unit. Funded by Stimuleringsfonds, the shoe was created in collaboration Suzanne Oude Hengel and Peterson Stoop.

SOTA is a “cross-section” of what is and is not possible in sustainable footwear design at this moment in time. It does not solve the issues inherent in making sustainable products, but rather holds a magnifying glass up to current construction methods and design principles and asks; How can they be reformed for the better? What are the choices and compromises necessary to stay true to a mandate of sustainability as a designer?

The goal was to create not only a sustainable shoe, but also to make the story of its genesis public. Each step in the knitting and cobbling processes was documented and later shared through SOTA’s dedicated Instagram page.

By working together, Suzanne Oude Hengel and Peterson Stoop were able to dive into their respective areas of expertise and learn from each other to create a shoe that explores seamless knitting and sustainable shoe making practices, and speculates, “What is possible now and are we ready to put sustainable design choices into practice?”
