Started from scraps
Nom is hort for Nompumelelo. a name of Zulu origin and means ‘Mother of success / Mother of freedom’. Nom is an artist born In Eswatini and based in the Netherlands after studying textile design and a career as a fashion designer, she embarked on her own creative journey.
“I explored different textile techniques before being introduced to the art of weaving and taught myself how to weave. As my knowledge and confidence grew, I became more and more comfortable leaving things out and that’s where my first designs started to take shape.
An essential ingredient in my designs is a (re)appreciation for what is already there and exploring new possibilities In my latest wall objects I use my scraps from previous pieces and scraps which I get from a local carpenter. All pieces are different and that challenges me to look for new possibilities and find harmony through color and geometric patterns.”
