Sync: Craftmanship Within Industry 4.0

By 01-01-2021

One Week About – Student Work, Faculty of Industrial Design, TU/e

Final Master project
Stijn Oude Lenferink

“In today’s wood workshop the fabrication process is increasingly computationally controlled (CNC, laser-cutting, etc.). This is motivated by the need to reduce cost and increase the speed and reproducibility of manufacturing. Within the upcoming Industry 4.0 these computational processes will become dominant. The user will loose agency because of which qualities that are covetable in craftsmanship are lost.”

“Sync portrays a vision of user agency within the Industry 4.0 transition by directly linking input and output. The user guides Sync within the fabrication process, effectively pairing the capabilities of the robot (strength, precision and repeatability) with the skills of the user (know-how, analysis and decision-making), making the process precise and repeatable while remaining flexible and ambiguous.”
